70% of Zimbabweans live on less than $1.90/day.
Imagine this.
You’re a mother to three children. Your oldest child suffers from severe mental health problems that require expensive medication. Your husband loses his job and your family is left with no source of income.
You know you must find a way forward, but you face many obstacles. The most painful part is knowing that your son can be healthy with proper medication which you cannot afford.
What do you do?
Facing 90% inflation, Portia learned how to beat poverty.
This is the story of Portia – a mother in Zimbabwe. And for her, the answer was simple. This was not going to be the end, but only the beginning of her story.
She decided to start a recycling business. A neighbor introduced her to Hope’s business training, which helped her form a Business Savings Group with three other women entrepreneurs. This created an opportunity for her to access capital to grow her business.
Now she is generating a monthly income of $160, which enables her to provide for her family and purchase the medication her son needs.
She shares, “Entrepreneurship has restored my dignity. With my son being mentally stable, I am committed to growing my business and ensuring my family will never experience poverty again.”
“Entrepreneurship has restored my dignity.”
