Learned Helplessness and Overcoming Barriers in Underserved Communities
by Nick van Vliet, Hope Supporter
As a supporter of Hope Ventures, I've often reflected on how educational strategies can inform our approach to starting businesses in underserved communities. A key concept that resonates with both fields is 'learned helplessness.' My experiences at Mathnasium, a math tutoring center, provide a vivid example of this phenomenon.
At Mathnasium, we focus on developing students' confidence and self-sufficiency in math. However, a significant hurdle we frequently encounter is learned helplessness. This occurs when a student becomes so reliant on a tutor's assistance that they lose the ability to solve problems independently.
It's a situation where the student isn't learning the subject but rather learning dependency.
This issue was evident with a grade school student named Madison. She initially hated math, feeling lost and "stupid." Our strategy wasn't to spoon-feed her answers but to identify her learning gaps and provide suitable material, coupled with a balanced level of instruction. This approach didn't just improve Madison's math skills; it boosted her self-esteem.
The journey with Madison at Mathnasium mirrors the ethos of Hope Ventures in a profound way. In community development, especially in poverty-stricken areas, the risk of learned helplessness is high when external interventions create dependency rather than empowerment.
Hope Ventures’ approach is akin to Mathnasium's: assessing the unique needs, providing the right tools and knowledge, and fostering independence and confidence.
In my view, Hope Ventures is doing more than just helping to start businesses; it's breaking the cycle of learned helplessness. By empowering individuals with the skills and confidence to succeed in their business ventures, the organization is paving the way for sustainable community growth and development.
In conclusion, my experiences in education have shown me the transformative power of the right kind of support – a lesson that Hope Ventures exemplifies in its mission.
Together, we can help individuals and communities move beyond learned helplessness towards a future where they can thrive.
